Remembering Janet

In September, we were deeply saddened by the passing of Janet Person. Many people connected to UVic Law shared our sorrow. As an Admissions Officer for the faculty, Janet had recruited students to UVic Law for 30+ years, but her role in the faculty often went above and beyond her job description. She was the staff representative for many committees over the years, she was an involved and caring colleague who voiced thoughtful opinions and offered advice, and she listened in a way that made you felt heard and supported. Janet encouraged people to join her on wellness walks to Finnerty Gardens or Mt Tolmie, and frequently shared her fabulous baking.

In 2018, we featured Janet in the spotlight section of our e-news.

UVic Law staff members formed the team Janet’s Fraser Crew and walked in memory of Janet on Oct 4 in the Run for the Cure. The team raised over $7,400 and won a top fundraising team award in the Post Secondary Challenge. It seemed fitting that the run took place across the street from where we worked with Janet, and across many of those paths we had walked with her over the years.

Originally from Smithers, Janet came to Victoria in the mid-80s to complete her BA. Her husband and childhood sweetheart, Dan, followed the next year. Together they have two children. Our hearts are with Janet’s family.
